Notes For Season Two, Episode Four (#2.004)
This post contains notes made during my most recent viewing (December 2019) of Twin Peaks season two, episode four (#2.004, Laura's Secret Diary).
Warning: Possibly contains spoilers for later episodes and the film Fire Walk With Me.
Red text indicates deleted dialogue. Please forgive my mistakes.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
- Sounds heard during the opening: Laura saying, Daddy (over and over). The sound of Laura breathing. Strange electric sound at 1:40 and again at 1:49 and 2:03. Horrible loud crashing sound twice, but second time ends in that music, almost like something faded. The way a Tornado siren fades. A hospital monitor. Laura breathing throughout. It may not be Laura, but is a woman.
- The director Todd Holland said that he wanted Sheryl Lee to say, "Daddy, no." But Mark Frost wouldn't allow it. Holland said his reason for wanting to include the line had to do with Laura objecting to her father killing Jacques. He was unaware of Leland's guilt. I believe Holland said this on the Twin Peaks: Unwrapped Podcast.
- If every episode is a day, how was it March 3rd that Leland went to Calhoun Memorial Hospital to kill Jacques? Renault's death occurred in episode seven (1.007, The Last Evening). So Feb 24th, 25th, 26th, 27th, 28th, 29th, 30th would have been 7 days. It seems to me that the document that Ben signed before he went to see the "new girl" was dated March 3rd as well.
- Why does Doc Hayward have to be present during Leland's confession?
- Cooper seems so hateful toward Doc Hayward. Turning around to him almost violently. He gives him a hateful look.
- Cooper is unabashed in his sudden dislike of Leland. Though, in the past, he was willing to overlook questioning the parents to let them grieve. He seems less forgiving here, more hardened. But why toward Leland alone?
- I think it's inappropriate for the scene with Leland to be followed by the comical sperm moment.
- Andy tells Doc Hayward that he wants to speak about his test, though earlier he said his test was done in Tacoma. Now he's acting as if Doc should know about it.
- Andy: I bought these from Phillip Gerard yesterday while he was waiting.
This makes it sound as though Gerard's scene is shown out of sequence.
- Leo is very clearly not competent. Why even bother with a trail?
- There are red curtains in the Great Northern. Ben has his employees wear red. The girls at One-Eyed Jack's always had red in their outfits. Usually red, white, black, and yellow. The curtains at the Great Notheren (downstairs) are red. The curtains at Jack's are red. The curtains in the Lodge are red.
- Video of Audrey, video of Laura. Pausing the videos on their faces. Faces that cry out for help.
- Smith reaches toward an end table, grasps Laura's diary. The one Donna spotted there previously. Donna reacts. Smith looks at her; can see the eager curiosity in her eyes. (The diary was on another table.)
- Harold's character seems different in this episode compared to his other appearances.
- Cooper is harder in this episode. He doesn't seem to react to seeing Audrey on film in Ben's office.
- One would think that Dale would have his eyes fixed on the video, trying to discover Audrey's location. He, however, is paying more attention to Ben.
- You can hear fire in the background while Ben is talking to Cooper.
- The sound of frogs in Feb/March. I can attest it's possible. I've heard them that early.
- 21:10 backward noise heard by Audrey as Emory says he did not hit her.
- 23:43 another moment of backward speech with Emory speaking. "You see Audrey in a situation like this".
- When we see Jean has a gun, it seems to be aimed at Audrey
- Renault casually pulls out a silenced .38 and shoots Battis three times. A beat. Battis, quite dead, and his chair, fall over backwards. Audrey recoils in horror. Renault holds her.
- According to the script, Donna missed two days of school last week
- TRUMAN
(Cooper, I've steered) I've stayed clear when you asked me to (is there anything I need to know about this one?) and helped when you needed it. But Coop, I've got to put my oar in here.
COOPER
What do you mean?
TRUMAN
You're not getting a little too personal with your work, are you?
COOPER
Absolutely not.
- Why didn't Josie tell Truman that she was going shopping? That would have made matters easier, wouldn't it?
- 32:50 There is a sound of electricity. 32:52 - sounds like a terrible scream. This comes with a flash of lighting
- In the script, in a deleted scene, Judge Sternwood asks that Leland's handcuffs be removed. Leland isn't wearing cuffs in the televised scene, though he was when escorted down the hall moments earlier.
- Cooper is attracted to Sid. His face changes when he sees her. Harry seems to be attracted to her as well.
- Sid wears a one or two piece leather outfit much like John Jusitce Wheeler. Harry watches Dale as Dale speaks to Sid, knowingly.
- Harry asks Dale if he's in any particular hurry. Harry, let me buy you a beer. This is while Cooper knows Audrey is being held hostage.
- Harry looks to the glass Cooper moves, like he's going to comment (at the bar).
- The sound when Hank goes to the door, before facing Jonathan and before the power goes out, reminds me of a film reel reaching its end.
- Jonathan takes some blood from Hank's bloody chin/mouth, and acts as though that is the blood he'll take for their pact, but yet when their thumbs touch, Hank reacts as though he's in pain? As though Jonathan hurt his finger.
