The Placement of Leo's Gunshot Wounds; Leo's Possible Death
When Leo Johnson is shot by Hank Jennings in the season one finale of Twin Peaks, he is thrown back to the sofa, gasping for breath. Immobile and in shock, Leo watches the television as it plays an episode of Invitation to Love. One of the characters, Montana, is shot at nearly the same time as Leo, and the man watches the scenario in sedate fascination. He then seems to either slip out of consciousness or under the haze of death.
Leo was shot near a clavicle. However, when we next see him, his gunshot wound appears to have moved to his lower torso.

Notice Leo's wound is now seemingly situated near his ribs. (Above.) This is in the season two premiere (2.001, May The Giant Be With You.)
There is a reddened patch of skin near where the wound was made but canonically there hasn't been enough time for the wound to have healed to this extent.
I searched for a reason why a doctor would place electrodes on a person's shoulders. The only information I could find pertained to the treatment of muscle pain. Perhaps the adhesive of the electrodes acted as an irritant to Eric De Re's skin, requiring them to be placed elsewhere.
When Leo was shot in season one, his only wound was near his neck. There is no blood near his ribs or waist in the image above. Hank fired only one shot.
In a video of deleted scenes and raw footage, Mark Frost directs Eric Da Re, as Leo, to feel the wound. The footage is without music and its original raw audio. Eric's in-character labored breathing is almost painful to hear. Due to his difficulty breathing, and the placement of his wound, I am prone to think one of Leo's lungs may have been punctured. In the video, Dana Ashbrook receives direction from Frost regarding Bobby's reaction to Leo, and Dana says, "He's already dead." Frost doesn't correct Dana. He directs him to react to a previous moment when Leo approached with an axe (though Eric is apparently on the sofa). This can be heard around 18:55 in this video.
My theory is that Leo originally died, but that decision was later changed, like some other stories and plot lines in early season two.
