An Early, Abandoned Element: Maddy Meeting Jacoby

Maddy Twin Peaks, Twin Peaks, Dr. Jacoby, Twin peaks script, Maddy Ferguson,

On their blog, Twin Peaks Archive kindly shared the second draft of the script for episode six (1.006, Realization Time). In this draft, there is a small change in the plot that never fully materialized in the series.

Part of James and Donna's original plan to remove Jacoby from his office seems to have once involved Maddy purposefully meeting with Jacoby in Easter Park.

From the script,

Note that James reminds Maddy of their plan, whatever that might have entailed, and Donna warns her to be careful. Donna says this on the same page that Jacoby is described as arming himself with a gun.

There is no mention of a videotape in the second draft script. Dr. Jacoby seemed fairly convinced he was speaking to Laura on the phone.

In the televised episode, Maddy remains in costume as she stays in Easter Park for no obvious reason other than for Jacoby to see her. He is momentarily stunned by the sight of her as Laura, allowing the masked man an opportunity to attack.

The original idea of Maddy remaining in costume as Laura endures without need. With the use of this element, there is a chance that some of the other finalized ideas were once in slightly different forms in earlier storylines. Jacoby's later skepticism about receiving a call from Laura may have been rooted in his reaction to his encounter with Laura's imposter.

One wonders why Donna and Maddy recorded the video at Easter Park. As it is, they apparently drive to Easter Park, record the video, drive to Jacoby's office, leave the tape and return to Easter Park to meet with James and make the call to Jacoby's office. Why was it necessary they film the video at Easter Park? For that matter, why does Jacoby assume that "Laura" will remain in Easter Park after filming the video at that location? She told him to meet her at Sparkwood and 21. How could he be sure she was lying?

Without an earlier script draft for episode seven (1.007, The Last Evening), one can only speculate on what Maddy, James and Donna's plan involved. We do, however, have a reason why Maddy remains dressed as Laura after filming the video for Dr. Jacoby: It is an idea carried over from an abandoned plot.
