James' Pilot Motorcycle Accessory

James' motorcycle handlebar is briefly accessorized by a familiar cartoon character throughout the Twin Peaks pilot and episode 18 (2.011, Masked Ball), which uses footage from the pilot.

The accessory is a bendable Pokey the pony figure from Art Clokey's Gumby

The figure is difficult to identify as Pokey figures have been in circulation since the 1960s -- searches on eBay yield over a thousand results. The figure cannot be seen with enough clarity to identify it with certainty.

According to Wikipedia, Gumby experienced a resurgence in popularity in 1988, leading me to believe the figure dates from that time.

The figure in James' possession appears similar to a version offered by the Jesco company.

Details I've noticed about James' figure: The eye is large, and its pupil is small and almost a single dot. He has long legs and rounded, flat hooves. Seeing him on my 4k TV leads me to believe Pokey's eyes protrude and are not simply painted on as with some models, though that may not be so.

The pony is affixed to the handlebars by a doubled-over strap of blue plastic or rubber, which can be seen in the promotional image below.

Searching for any mentions of the figure online in connection with Twin Peaks, I learned that some - perhaps jokingly - see a red velvet room in Gumby's dreams as being a possible inspiration for the Black Lodge.
