Maddy's Dream and Vision Episode vs. Script
The season two premiere contains a scene of Maddy and Sarah resting in the Palmer living room which leads to a vision.
The following is my transcript.
The scene begins with Maddy, whose gaze lingers on the carpet floor. Sarah leans back in her chair.
Sarah: Do you miss Beth?
Maddy: (still distracted) What?
Sarah: Have you been missing your mom? *
Maddy is still very much distracted by the carpet. Where seconds ago her distraction seemed almost dreamlike it is now framed with concern. She sits forward as if to confide.
Maddy: Aunt Sarah?
Sarah: Yeah?
Maddy: I had the strangest dream last night.
Sarah's interest changes from serene to fearful.
Sarah: About what?
Maddy: The rug. Right here. (She motions.) Right from this angle where I'm sitting.
Sarah: Was Laura in it?
They're suddenly interrupted by the sound of Leland Palmer singing. He appears from behind a room divider not far from the women. His hair is white, shocking his wife and niece.
He sways with the song then taps the crowns of their heads. "Morning, dears," he says before quickly stepping out of the room, resuming his song. Sarah stands as if to follow.
Sarah: Oh Leland.
Maddy: Uncle Leland's hair turned white!
Sarah watches Leland, her eyes showing concern and great sadness. We can hear a door open and close.
Sarah: Leland, come back here.
Sarah follows her husband out of the room. Once Maddy is alone, her attention returns to the carpet which changes before her eyes. A long stretch is altered in color. Maddy becomes beside herself at this sight, as though her worst fears were realized.
The scene as it appears in the script for episode eight (2.001, May the Giant Be With you.)
17. INT. PALMER LIVING ROOM - DAY
CUT TO:
SARAH PALMER and MADDY FERGUSON are having coffee both lost in private
thought. Pause.
MADDY
I had the strangest dream last night.
SARAH
About Laura?
MADDY
I'm not sure. Maybe. I was in a desert. It was hot and
dry. There was some kind of animal with me, I
couldn't see it
but I could feel it breathing on me.
SARAH
What kind of animal?
MADDY
A big cat. I think it was gray. I could see its eyes,
yellow
and red. Then we were in the woods. It was very
dark. I
woke up and the window was open. There was a
cold wind blowing through the room.
From the other room, loud robust singing approaches.

LELAND'S VOICE
"Oh, marsey-doats and dosesy-doats and little
lambs
eat ivy/A kiddlede ivy too, wouldn't you?
... marsey
doats and dosesy-doats and little lambs
eat ivy/A
kiddledeet ivy too, wouldn't you? ... "
LELAND PALMER enters the room, well dressed in a three-piece buisness suit, carrying his briefcase. He continues to sing, happy and good-natured, genuinely trying to entertain the two women. His hair has turned completely white.
LELAND (CONTINUED)
"Now if the words sound queer and funny to your ear/
A little bit jumpled and jivey ...
(moving closer to them)
Say 'Mares eat oats and does eat oats, and little lambs
eat ivy' ...
He kisses them both, grabs his hat, kind of flips it onto his head, picks up an umbrella and exits, still singing ...
LELAND (CONTINUED)
"Oh, marsey-doats; and dosesy-doats; and little lambs
eat ivy/A kiddledeet ivy too, wouldn't you? ... marsey
doats and dosesy-doats and little lambs eat ivy/A kiddledeet ivy too, wouldn't you?
Sarah and Maddy look at each other.
END ACT TWO
FADE TO BLACK
Though we have no other example of BOB being tied to a large cat, the script seems to elude to Maddy having an encounter with him as not only does she find herself in the woods with the creature, but she wakes to find her bedroom window open and a cold wind blowing. Throughout The Secret Diary of Laura Palmer, wind seems to be tied to BOB, almost as if it is at his command. In the diary and Fire Walk With Me, BOB is seen entering Laura's room through her window. Maddy saying that she couldn't see the animal, but could feel it breathing sounds eerily like BOB's behavior as written by Laura.
We have some indication that BOB is in league with or can possess owls. Perhaps he took the guise of other animals as well. In The Missing Pieces, the electrician above the convenience store utters, "Animal life."
In the script for episode 19, after Major Briggs disappearance, Cooper is questioned by Briggs' superior Colonel Riley,
REILLY
The area where he disappeared. Now when you
were at
the site, did you happen to see any wildlife
in the area?
COOPER
Wildlife?
REILLY
Squirrels, skunks, ground hogs.
COOPER
No ...
REILLY
Any birds? ... Owls.
COOPER
Moments before the Major disappeared I heard an owl.
REILLY
(not giving away a thing)
No visual contact?
Dugpa shared a video of a Japanese release which sees BOB superimposed over the shot of the carpet.
The footage of BOB in this alternative version is from episode nine (2.002, Coma).
In episode ten, Cooper states that Maddy has had a vision of BOB twice in the last two days. We see only one of Maddy's visions, which occurs as she, Donna and James sing in the Hayward living room. Another vision was scripted to occur prior to this, when Donna informed Maddy that she was taking over Laura's Meals on Wheels route.
The only alternative we have in the broadcast canon is to interpret Maddy's vision of the carpet as being tied to BOB.
(* Something about this has always made me wonder if Sarah is used to Maddy or even Laura acting this way. She closes her eyes, almost with humor before repeating herself.)
