Differences In Twine, Red Thread
Warning: This post contains disturbing imagery.
A variety of twine is shown in the original series and the film Fire Walk With Me. In the International Pilot, Cooper is awakened from a fitful sleep by a phone call from Mike. A sample of their exchange:
"Yes, I know about Theresa."
Figure's Voice:
"I know the man who did her ... I know about the stitches, with the red thread..."
Hearing this, Cooper decides to meet with the man because he knows unreleased information regarding the case. However, the red thread is never mentioned again.
When Cooper and Truman investigate the train car where Laura and Ronette were taken, several cloths/papers soaked in blood litter the floor. A lone string or dark thread appears to rest atop the material.
Mysteriously, also on the table is a small bag that contains a darker strand of what almost looks like hair or a leather cord, possibly James' half of the heart necklace. A lighter gray cord, presumably the Finley's Fine Twine used to bind the arms of Laura and Ronette, is also on the table. Circled below is the possible hair or necklace.
In season one, episode four (1.004, The One Armed Man), Andy returns from the convenience store next to the Lydecker Veterinary clinic with a spool of Finley's Fine Twine. The twine he gives Agent Cooper is light in color.
In episode three (1.003, Rest in Pain), Albert presents Cooper and Truman with his findings, including fibers from two different types of twine used to bind Laura's wrists and arms. The first, the dark twine, is similar to the train car fiber that Albert says was embedded in Laura's skin.
Albert says the lighter-colored twine was found in the rail car. Neither twine seems to match the dark twine/string/thread seen in the train car.
The twine around Ronette's wrists in the pilot is a lighter color and a thinner cord.
Notice that in the image above, Ronette has blood on her torn and tattered slip. The state of her clothing makes me wonder if the tattered bloody cloth near the dirt mound in the train car is remnants ripped or cut from her slip.
In Fire Walk With Me, the twine used to bind Laura and Ronette's wrists is close to the type of twine seen around Ronette's wrists in the pilot. Note that in the series, Ronette was, according to Albert, tied up once, and Laura twice. In Fire Walk With Me, Laura is tied up three times. Ronette is bound twice.
It is odd how none of the twine seen on Ronette and Laura exactly matches the twine in evidence.
While Ronette's upper arms are tied behind her back as she is led to the train car, she does not have marks in the same area in the pilot. There are bruises, but they do not appear to be from twine.
Laura does at times have rope marks on her upper arms, other times not.
In Twin Peaks: The Return, there is twine in an evidence bag from one of the boxes pertaining to the case. It does not resemble any twine from the past, except for the thick yarn-type fiber. But even at that, it is a stretch. It appears to be a cord with James' half of the gold heart necklace.
