Within the Circle
When Cooper and Truman confront BOB in the European version of the Twin Peaks pilot, it is in the basement boiler room of the local hospital. BOB hovers near a circle of candles framing a mound of dirt. This mound is almost
identical to the one found in the train car. An
obscured object rests in the middle of the dirt mound. Some have theorized
that it is a human ear, an homage to David Lynch's Blue Velvet. In that film, the main character, Jeffrey Beaumont (Kyle MacLachlan), discovers a severed ear in a field. The ear leads to a chain of events which open a door to the dark world of Jeffrey's dreams and nightmares.
The script for season one, episode two, contains a description of the item resting in the mound. It states that the item is the other half of Laura Palmer's heart necklace.
From the script:
76. INT. HOSPITAL BASEMENT BOILER ROOM - NIGHT
Cooper and Truman enter the basement, gun drawn. KILLER BOB, the frightening
long-haired man, crouches over a circle of candles on the far side of the room.
Bob's hand reaches in and sets down a half of a heart necklace onto a pile of dirt
in the center of the candles.
The script for season one, episode two (Zen or the Skill to Catch a Killer,
#1.002), oddly includes the events of the European pilot as part of Cooper's dream, causing one to believe the entire ending of the European
pilot may have once been considered for inclusion in the televised
episode. As it is remnants remain, such as Cooper speaking to Philip Gerard in the hospital morgue, BOB saying, "I'll catch you with my death bag", and Cooper's encounter with Laura and the Man From Another Place in the Red Room.
Recall how Cooper later mentions things in his dream we never see, such
as Hawk being a sketch artist, Andy and Lucy, etc.
The exact shape of the item in the mound cannot be discerned, though it may be of flesh. It almost appears a blend of wax and skin. There is no glisten of metal.
Though we will likely never know the truth, the information presented in the script is interesting, nonetheless.
