The Crossing of Hands and Eyes

Annie Blackburn, Twin Peaks, Twin Peaks theory

The crossing of one's eyes seems connected to magic or darkness in Twin Peaks. At least four characters move their eyes in such a way during the original series; The Man From Another Place, Annie Blackburne, Windom Earle, and one of Earle's victims, Erik Powell, a man whose body is found in Sheriff Truman's office. Erik Powell's eyes are seen this way only briefly. More can be read here.

Windom Earle was not a stranger to dark forces. In the series and Scott Frost's The Autobiography of F.B.I. Special Agent Dale Cooper, My Life, My Tapes heavily alludes that Earle made contact with some form of darkness, possibility spirits of The Black Lodge. I mention this because it seems strange that The Man From Another Place is the only other character to cross their eyes besides Earle and his victims.

In the Black Lodge, BOB stands beside Windom, his hand apparently at the nape of Windom's neck or on his upper back. All the time BOB has hold of Windom, the former FBI Agent's eyes occasionally dart from side to side but mainly remain crossed until life vacates his body.

Another example occurs after Windom Earle draws Annie Blackburne within the circle of sycamore trees at the entrance of the Black Lodge. Annie's hand is held by Windom, and he says, "I tell you they have not died. Their hands clasp yours and mine." Annie's eyes cross, and she acts as though once in the circle, she is under a spell. Windom indicates his knowledge of Annie's state with his words, "You won't leave me now, not in this circle of trees".

In the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me, Annie's eyes stare blankly ahead after her body, or a body resembling hers leaves the Black Lodge. She appears in Laura's dream or vision, lying beside her in bed. After she delivers her message to Laura, she lowers and her eyes cross again, as though she is returned after momentarily breaking from a spell.

In a scene from The Missing Pieces, Annie's eyes appear the same.

A moment in the international pilot slightly reminds me of actions carried out by Annie and Windom in the final episode of the original series. In the international pilot, the Man From Another Place takes hold of Laura's hand, and, by my interpretation, draws from Laura the power necessary to complete an action or spell. He seems to try on his own before gaining help, rubbing his hands together and crossing his eyes, but he is unsuccessful. It isn't until he and Laura hold hands that he is able to draw forth the shadow behind the curtains.

The Man From Another Place takes hold of 'Laura's' hand.

Windom Earle takes hold of Annie's hand.

Earle also requires help from Annie and takes hold of her hand. This seems more than a coincidence.
