In the 1990 Tobe Hooper film Spontaneous Combustion, the main character, Sam (Brad Dourif), and his girlfriend Lisa (Cynthia Bain) seek help at a hospital after Sam's arm erupts in flame, his first personal experience with spontaneous combustion. Instead of aid, they encounter additional problems as Sam's doctor and his accomplice are corrupt and wish him harm. At the moment this dread is sensed by Sam and viewer alike, we hear a sound effect often heard throughout Twin Peaks. It is a sound that accompanies scenes of fear, the supernatural, and darkness. The sound effect can be heard at the 53:54 time stamp in the video below.
Spontaneous Combustion was initially released on February 23rd, 1990. The Twin Peaks pilot first aired on April 8th, 1990.
Lead actor Brad Dourif appeared in David Lynch's Dune, Blue Velvet, and the Lynch produced Werner Herzog film My Son, My Son, What Have Ye Done. Ron Blair, the actor who portrayed Twin Peaks' Great Northern employee, Randy St. Croix, makes a small appearance in Spontaneous Combustion as a café waiter.
