Donna Hayward's Clothing in Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and The Missing Pieces

This post focuses on Donna Hayward's outfits as they appear in the film Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me and its deleted scenes known as The Missing Pieces.

Donna Hayward's apparel combines styles, namely that of a mid-century Bobby Soxer and the then-current fashion of the late '80s and early '90s. She wears modern coats over classic blouses and skirts and sports the same accessories each time we see her, save for her earrings. Almost every day, she wears white ankle socks and loafers. Ankle socks worn with flats made a resurgence around the time Fire Walk With Me was released, though Donna's look, like that of most Twin Peaks characters, appears partially based on 1950s and '60s fashions.

The Bobby Soxer in the tartan skirt could almost be Audrey Horne.

Donna wears only four different outfits in the film. During her first appearance on Thursday, February 17th, she wears a purple coat over her sweater and skirt. On Saturday the 19th, she pairs a black coat with her Pink Room attire, which almost makes it seem as though she wears two more ensembles than she does in actuality. Donna wears the color purple three times: A purple coat and skirt when we first see her, and a purple cardigan on Sunday, which she wears again during her last appearance in the film three days later. If we take into perspective Lynch's attention to detail, the use of color may be of significance.

Donna's outfits are listed in the order in which they appear. Images from The Missing Pieces are grouped with stills from the film due to necessity. For instance, when Laura visits the Hayward home on Friday, we observe Donna from the shoulders up in the theatrical cut. To view her entire outfit, we must seek The Missing Pieces. Donna's heart earrings are seen clearest in the Pink Room. Therefore, though she wears the same earrings in her introductory scene, the image representing them is selected from the Pink Room.

Lara Flynn Boyle wears at least two of the same articles of clothing during her portrayal of Donna in the television series. More here

Thursday

Donna wears a purple coat with brown toggle buttons when she exits her house to join Laura on a walk to school. The coat's bold pattern consists of flowers and green and coral-colored designs. She wears under the coat a dark violet button-down skirt. She pairs this with a beige long-sleeved sweater, white socks, and dark brown loafers. Donna's blouse sometimes has a pink tone depending on the film transfer.

Donna wears with this outfit staples we will continue to see throughout the film. White socks and loafers, a ring on each hand, and a bracelet. She also wears a round-faced watch, a black purse, and heart earrings.

Donna's shoes. She wears the same pair of loafers with white socks throughout the film. No other shoes are worn. For that reason, they won't be mentioned again.

Friday

On Friday, Donna wears a beige blouse, an orange and brown sweater with light bluish-gray and pink detailing, and a red skirt. Her jewelry, aside from her earrings, is the same as she wore on Thursday.

Saturday

Donna wears a black coat made of ribbed fabric when she visits the Palmer house and accompanies Laura to Canada. Like the purple coat she wore on Thursday, this coat also has toggle buttons. Though I cannot find a match while searching, the style reminds me of casual looks seen in media from the late '50s and early '60s. She wears a long green scarf with the black coat, along with her black purse. Beneath the coat, she wears a light orange or beige retro or vintage blouse with a pattern of dark rectangles and light buttons, possibly mother of pearl, a tartan skirt, and a brown woven belt. She wears the same rings, bracelet, watch, and heart earrings she wore on Thursday. Her make-up appears to be subtly darker than we have previously seen.

The coat appears to be hooded. The change in her make-up is more noticeable in this lighting.

When Donna accompanies Laura to the Pink Room, she removes her coat.

Note the pattern and buttons of her blouse. The style is slightly more adult and sophisticated.

Sunday

Donna is traumatized the morning after her experience at the Pink Room. As she seeks answers and comfort from Laura, she wears a sweater, a gray blouse, and small gold bead earrings. She is covered by a blanket, but in a promotional photo from an alternate take or behind-the-scenes, we can see she is wearing blue jeans. Her style has reverted to that of a young person. She covers herself, weighted with the horror of the previous night.

Donna's appearance in the film is more disheveled than in the image above

Note her gray shirt appearing at the collar of her sweater.

Thursday

Donna is briefly seen at school on February 23rd. Absorbed in her thoughts, she doesn't notice her best friend's pain. It's as if Donna isn't even in the same room the last time she and Laura are together. She is seen for only a few frames. She seems to be wearing the same outfit she wore Sunday morning, almost like an afterthought.
